Baseball added to GCC
Gogebic Community College will add Baseball to their Varsity Athletic program for the 2018-19 academic year. Bruce Mahler, of Marenisco, was recently hired as the first Men’s Baseball Coach and is exciting to get the program up and running.
“Fall Ball practice and scrimmage season will begin approximately September 3, 2018 and run for approximately four weeks. The Purpose of Fall Ball is to evaluate and conduct practice for incoming athletes in preparation for the springtime regular season,” said Mahler. Under the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) rules a fall season can begin as early as August 22, 2018 and run through mid-November. GCC, as other Northern Tier colleges with baseball, opts to play a full spring season with a limited Fall Ball season. At this time, it is anticipated that scrimmages will include Finlandia University with potentially a game or two against a MCAC (Minnesota Collegiate Athletic Conference) opponent and a game or two against a WBA (Wisconsin Baseball Association) Amateur Team such as the Ashland Merchants or the Duluth Padres of the Upper 13 League, all sanctioned and allowed under NJCAA Rules.
Spring Baseball will begin with indoor practice in the Lindquist Student and Conference Center commencing approximately January 10, 2019. Work is underway to acquire all the requisite practice equipment including batting cage, portable pitching mound, screens and batting tees. GCC anticipates playing a 35 - 45 game schedule, with the majority of games in a doubleheader format throughout the upper Midwest area. The season runs during the months of March and April with post-season tournaments and the “World Series” held in May.
Lorenson Field on Ayer Street in Ironwood has been designated as the home field.
Mahler’s baseball experience spans approximately 20 years coaching on the High School, American Legion, and Men's Amateur level. He was the Head Coach of the West Iron County High School/American Legion Team from 1999 – 2005, winning the Western Upper Peninsula Baseball League (WUPBL) Tournament in 2002 and was one of the top teams in that league during his tenure. In 2005, Mahler resurrected the Wakefield-Marenisco High School Baseball team that laid dormant for several years again making them a top contender in the WUPBL. In 2008, Mahler retired from coaching high school/Legion Baseball, but continued to coach the Marenisco Milltowners men's amateur baseball team of the Wisconsin Baseball Association Great Northern Conference and Upper 13 Baseball League from 2007-2013, winning the Great Northern Conference Title in 2008. During that time the Milltowners reached the WBA State Semi-Finals twice. For information about the inaugural season of Men’s Baseball at GCC, please contact Mahler at email@example.com
